Ian's Fundraiser

Some fundraising stories are about miles. Some are about medals. But some, like Ian’s, are about doing something difficult for someone who inspires you.

Earlier this year, Ian took on the challenge of the Great North Run in support of Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, raising an incredible £683.30 to support Roald Dahl Nurses and seriously ill children across the UK. But the journey to the finish line wasn’t easy. Ada, Ian’s granddaughter, was born in May 2024 with a complex genetic condition. Ada has received vital support from her Roald Dahl Nurse, Scott.   Ada’s strength and resilience through adversity, and the vital support the family received from their Roald Dahl Nurse became the inspiration behind Ian’s challenge.  “It was a hard race for different reasons,” Ian shared. “My family has personally benefited from the care and attention of a Roald Dahl Nurse. Ada has been through so much in her short life but is making great strides thanks to a team of wonderful surgeons, the charity, and her fabulous, devoted parents.  As a family, they are facing every setback with determination and fortitude. Ada has a long way to go, but nothing seems insurmountable with the support of such committed people.” 

Moved by the support the family have received, Ian decided to give something back.

“I’m so grateful to Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, that I wanted to try and raise some much-needed funds by running the Great North Run. "I gritted my teeth and got to the end, trying to look good for the cameras. Eventually, I got home, sat on the floor, and made a little speech. I got slightly emotional as I gave my medal to Ada and her parents. For the resilience and bravery she has shown, and for the fantastic care and love that Kyle and Jo have given her.
