Sickle Cell Challenge Games

Roald Dahl Haematology Nurse Specialists There are over 30 Roald Dahl Haematology Nurse Specialists in NHS hospitals across the UK. These Roald Dahl Nurses provide specialist support for children and young people with sickle cell disorder, thalassaemia, and other blood conditions.    Nurse Innovation Projects  We encourage our network of Roald Dahl Nurses to explore innovative ways of improving the healthcare outcomes and resilience of children and young people living with complex, lifelong conditions.  In response, our Roald Dahl Haematology Nurse Specialists identified a gap in available resources for educating children on what sickle cell disorder is and how to manage it effectively.

Sickle Cell Challenge Games

A group of Roald Dahl Nurses collaborated with the charity and Focus Games Ltd to create a series of educational games to help children, families, and peers, learn more about sickle cell disorder and how to manage it effectively. Together, we have developed a board game, online game, and card game for children aged 6 and 9 years to learn more about sickle cell disorder, how medications work, and how to avoid known triggers for a sickle cell crisis.

The board game is intended for children to play in the hospital and is designed to be played with a nurse, playworker, and parent/guardian.    The card game can be played in a hospital, school or home.    The online game is free to play with a parent/guardian. You can access the online game for free here.

We recommend that children playing the games are supported by an adult to help them understand the information presented in the games.   If you are interested in obtaining a board game or card game, please contact our Programmes Team for more information at: sicklecellgame@roalddahlcharity.org
